A total of 366,968 passengers took a ride on Dubai Metro in its first week of operation, figures by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) show.

Officials said they were “delighted” with the uptake by passengers, adding that some 42,972 people used the Red Line on Wednesday.

Mall of the Emirates was the most used station that day with 7,911 passengers moving through the turnstiles, followed by Khalid bin Al Waleed Station with 6,529 passengers.

Jafliah Station was the least used with just 1,776 passengers.

"These figures are a huge success to the RTA as they reflect the significant public up-take of Dubai Metro as a means of mobility,” said Peyman Younes Parham, director of marketing and corporate communications.

Ticket inspectors fined three passengers AED100 each for sitting in the Gold Class section of the train having only paid a standard class fare.

Fines range from AED100 to AED2,000 for fare dodging, tampering with the emergency stop buttons, and damaging property. Eating and drinking on the metro carries an AED100 fine.

"The success of Dubai Metro is a real success to the city of Dubai and a true manifestation of the bustling passenger traffic,” Peyman added.
